A man posing as a loan agent allegedly collected about Rs 4 lakh from seven villagers in Ichhawar, Madhya Pradesh, by promising SBI loans of Rs 6 lakh each. He was apprehended after villagers set a trap at the local tehsil office.

Police in Ichhawar, Sehore district, have arrested a suspect accused of swindling approximately Rs 4 lakh from seven local residents. The accused allegedly approached the villagers claiming he could secure personal loans of Rs 6 lakh each from the State Bank of India, a promise that turned out to be false.

When the promised loans failed to materialise, the victims coordinated with local authorities and set a trap at the Ichhawar tehsil complex. The suspect was apprehended there and handed over to the police for further investigation.

Investigators are now probing the extent of the fraud and verifying whether other residents may have been targeted. The case underscores the need for heightened vigilance against loan‑related scams in rural areas.

The police have filed a charge sheet against the accused under sections pertaining to cheating and fraud, and the matter is being forwarded to the district court for trial.
