Former tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh has publicly defended the proposed Shillong Peak ropeway project despite rising environmental concerns.

Former Meghalaya tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh stepped forward to back the controversial ropeway plan slated for Shillong Peak, a popular hilltop attraction near the state capital. Lyngdoh, who served in the cabinet until recently, said the project aligns with the state's long‑term tourism strategy.
The ropeway proposal has drawn criticism from environmental groups who warn that construction could disturb the fragile hill ecosystem and affect local flora and fauna. Critics argue that the area’s natural beauty, a key draw for visitors, may be compromised.
Lyngdoh countered these concerns by emphasizing that the project includes measures to minimise ecological impact and that it promises to boost visitor numbers, generate employment and improve connectivity to the peak. He urged stakeholders to focus on the potential socio‑economic benefits while ensuring responsible implementation.
