Former Chhatarpur Block Coordinator Sentenced to 3 Years for Rs 500 Toilet Bribe

A court sentenced ex‑block coordinator Neelam Tiwari to three years imprisonment for demanding Rs 500 per toilet, after Lokayukta police caught her in 2020.
The district court in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, has handed down a three‑year jail term to Neelam Tiwari, who served as the block coordinator at the time of the offence. The conviction relates to her alleged practice of extracting a fixed payment of Rs 500 from contractors for each toilet that was to be constructed under government schemes.
Investigations by the state Lokayukta’s police unit led to her arrest on 18 February 2020, when she was caught accepting the bribe in the act. The case, filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act, highlighted systemic misuse of funds earmarked for rural sanitation.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence of multiple transactions and testimonies from officials who corroborated the pattern of extortion. The judge noted that the amount, though modest per unit, accumulated to a substantial loss for the public exchequer given the scale of the sanitation program.
