Heavy rains triggered severe flooding across Bihar, killing 22 people in a day as water inundated villages and disrupted transport.
Heavy monsoon rains swept across Bihar on Tuesday, causing flash floods that swept away homes and roads. The deluge claimed 22 lives within a 24‑hour period, according to the state disaster management authority.
Rescue teams from the police, National Disaster Response Force and local volunteers were deployed to stranded villages, using boats and tractors to evacuate residents from submerged areas. Several districts reported water levels rising rapidly, cutting off electricity and communication networks.
The state government has declared a disaster emergency, mobilising relief supplies and setting up temporary shelters for affected families. Officials warned that more rain is expected later in the week, urging people in flood‑prone zones to stay alert and follow safety advisories.
Health workers have been dispatched to prevent water‑borne diseases, while the police continue to monitor bridges and roads for structural damage before reopening them to traffic.
