A blaze broke out in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra, killing three newborns and prompting the transfer of six others to other facilities.

A fire erupted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a government hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra. The blaze quickly engulfed the ward, forcing staff to evacuate the area while emergency services arrived on the scene.

According to hospital officials, three newborns succumbed to the fire, and six additional infants were moved to nearby hospitals for continued care. Medical teams worked to stabilize the transferred babies and to assess any injuries among the staff.

State health authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and to evaluate compliance with safety protocols in the facility. The investigation will also examine whether fire‑suppression systems were functional at the time of the incident.

The incident has raised concerns about infrastructure safety in neonatal units across the state, prompting calls for a comprehensive audit of equipment and emergency preparedness in hospitals.
