A blaze that broke out at the Vellalore dumpyard on the outskirts of Coimbatore was finally extinguished after more than a day of firefighting efforts.

A fire erupted at the Vellalore waste dump on the outskirts of Coimbatore on Monday, sending thick black smoke across the surrounding area. Firefighters from the district and state fire services arrived promptly and began a coordinated operation to contain the blaze.

The inferno proved difficult to control due to the large volume of combustible waste and the dry conditions prevailing in the region. Crews worked in shifts, employing water hoses, foam agents and aerial equipment to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential zones.

After more than 24 hours of continuous effort, the fire was finally doused, and the dumpyard was declared safe for inspection. No casualties were reported, though minor respiratory irritation was noted among nearby residents. Authorities have announced a review of waste‑management practices to avert similar incidents in the future.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by municipal bodies in handling rapidly accumulating solid waste, especially during the hotter months. Officials have urged the public to cooperate with waste segregation drives and to report any fire hazards promptly.

The site will remain under surveillance for the next few days while a thorough assessment of damage and environmental impact is conducted.
