A female cheetah imported from Botswana, identified as CCB‑2, will be released into Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh on 20 September, extending the state’s cheetah re‑introduction project beyond Kuno.
The Madhya Pradesh wildlife department is set to expand its cheetah re‑introduction programme beyond the Kuno reserve. On 20 September, a female cheetah designated CCB‑2, which was brought from Botswana, will be released into the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary located on the banks of the Chambal River.
CCB‑2 is part of a small cohort of African cheetahs that the state has imported to re‑establish a viable breeding population after the species disappeared from India over seven decades ago. The animal arrived in India earlier this year and has been undergoing health checks and acclimatization at a quarantine facility before being transferred to the sanctuary.
Officials say the move aims to create a second stronghold for the big cat, complementing the ongoing efforts at Kuno. Successful adaptation at Gandhi Sagar could allow future releases of additional individuals, ultimately targeting a self‑sustaining cheetah population in central India.
