A deteriorating Food Corporation of India storage facility in Deomali, Arunachal Pradesh has been flagged as a risk to stored foodgrains after the state Food Commission chairman inspected the site.
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown located in the town of Deomali in Arunachal Pradesh was found to be in a severely dilapidated condition during a recent inspection by the chairman of the State Food Commission. The official’s visit was prompted by growing concerns over the structural integrity of the storage facility, which holds significant quantities of wheat, rice and other essential foodgrains for the region.
According to the inspection report, the roof, walls and flooring of the godown show extensive wear, water seepage and signs of possible collapse. Such deterioration poses a direct threat to the quality and safety of the stored grains, increasing the risk of spoilage, pest infestation and loss of public food stocks.
The chairman highlighted the urgent need for remedial action, recommending that the FCI either undertake comprehensive repairs or relocate the inventory to a safer facility. He also urged the state government to prioritize funding for the maintenance of critical food storage infrastructure to safeguard food security in the northeastern region.
