Farmers' Union Gives Government Ultimatum Till Dussehra Over Power, Input and Price Issues

The Indian Farmers’ Union has warned that if its demands on electricity, fertilizer‑seed, irrigation, minimum support price and crop‑loss compensation are not met by Dussehra, it will launch a statewide agitation.

The Indian Farmers’ Union issued an ultimatum to the central and state governments, setting the Hindu festival of Dussehra as the deadline for meeting its core demands. The union said it will mobilise farmers across the state if the government fails to act before the deadline.
The demands focus on four critical areas: reliable and affordable electricity for irrigation, timely supply of quality fertilizer and certified seeds, assured irrigation water access, and a revision of the minimum support price to reflect current production costs. In addition, the union seeks compensation for crops that have suffered losses due to recent weather anomalies and market fluctuations.
Union leaders indicated that a failure to address these issues could trigger a coordinated, non‑violent but forceful movement, involving road blockades, rallies at district headquarters and a possible suspension of sowing activities. They emphasized that the protest would be peaceful but persistent, aiming to pressure authorities into action.
While officials have not issued a formal response, the deadline creates a narrow window for negotiations. Analysts note that similar ultimatums in the past have led to accelerated policy discussions, especially when large farmer constituencies are involved.
The situation underscores the growing tension between agricultural stakeholders and policymakers over resource allocation and price stability, a recurring theme in India's agrarian landscape.
