Arakera, October 10: Gopal, son of Munasi, aged 37, a resident of Hanumanayak Tanda in the Bandegudda area, died after battling the effects of a snakebite for five days in hospital. His death has left his wife and three children without their family's sole breadwinner.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow of grief over the entire tanda.
What Happened?
On Saturday evening, October 3, 2026, at around 5 p.m., Gopal went to his agricultural field to collect fodder for his cattle. While working in the field, he felt something bite his leg. However, he did not pay much attention to it, as it was time to catch a bus to Pune, and he proceeded with his journey.
The following morning, he began experiencing excessive sweating, weakness and dizziness. He was immediately admitted to a hospital in Pune, where doctors conducted various medical tests and confirmed that he had been bitten by a snake.
Five Days of Treatment Prove Futile
Gopal received continuous medical treatment from October 3 to October 8. However, as the venom had spread throughout his body, the treatment proved unsuccessful. According to family sources, he breathed his last on October 8.
His body was subsequently brought from Pune to Hanumanayak Tanda, where his last rites were performed.
Gopal earned his livelihood through farming and daily-wage labour. His sudden death has left his wife and three children facing an uncertain future.
Demand for Government Compensation
Gopal was the sole earning member of his family. His death has plunged his wife and children into severe financial hardship.
According to the applicable government provisions, compensation of ₹6 lakh may be available from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) in cases of death due to snakebite.
Tanda leaders have urged the Raichur Deputy Commissioner and the Arakera Tahsildar to visit the bereaved family immediately and provide financial assistance on humanitarian grounds.
They have also demanded widow pension benefits for Gopal's wife and financial support to ensure the education of his children.
The community has appealed to the authorities to take immediate action to help the grieving family rebuild their lives.
