Glacial lakes are enlarging, amplifying fears of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) that could threaten downstream communities.

Glacial lakes, formed by meltwater trapped behind natural ice dams, are steadily growing in size across the Himalayan belt. Recent satellite imagery shows a marked increase in surface area of several high‑altitude lakes, a trend linked to rising temperatures and accelerated glacier melt.

The expansion of these lakes heightens the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), sudden releases of water that can unleash catastrophic downstream flooding. Experts warn that even a modest rise in lake volume can destabilise the ice or moraine walls that contain them.

Communities situated along river valleys are particularly vulnerable. A GLOF could trigger flash floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage, jeopardising livelihoods and safety.

Monitoring efforts are being intensified, with satellite surveillance and on‑ground reconnaissance aimed at early detection of lake growth and potential breach points. However, the sheer scale of the Himalayan glacial system makes comprehensive risk assessment a formidable challenge.
