Excise Department Confiscates 800 Cartons of Meghalaya Liquor in Guwahati’s Nine Mile Area

The Assam Excise Department carried out a surprise operation in the Nine Mile area of Guwahati on Tuesday, confiscating eight hundred cartons of alcoholic beverage that had been sourced from the neighboring state of Meghalaya.
Officials said the seizure was part of an ongoing crackdown on the illegal movement of liquor across state borders, which often evades state taxes and regulatory controls.
The department has not disclosed the exact brand or type of the liquor, but confirmed that the stock was intended for distribution in local markets without proper licensing. The seized cartons will be retained as evidence while further investigation determines the parties responsible for the illicit supply chain.
Senior Excise Officer Rajesh Sharma, who oversaw the raid, emphasized that the department will continue to monitor inter‑state liquor trafficking and take strict action against violators to protect revenue and public health.
The operation underscores the state's commitment to enforcing excise laws and curbing the black‑market trade of alcohol in the region.
