If the proposal is approved, it is estimated that more than 225,000 new employees in Ahmedabad alone could become eligible for EPF contributions. This expansion would bring a significant number of informal and small‑scale workers into the formal pension framework.
The government has said it will review the proposal in the coming weeks, citing the need to protect workers in the informal sector and to enhance financial security for millions of employees across the country.
