Police in Hyderabad have detained an engineer accused of throwing sticks at a deity's idol in a Dilsukhnagar temple, citing disturbance of religious worship.
Hyderabad police arrested a 30-year-old civil engineer on Tuesday after receiving a complaint that he had thrown wooden sticks at the main idol in a temple located in the Dilsukhnagar neighbourhood. The officer in charge of the local police station said the suspect was apprehended at the temple premises shortly after the incident was reported by temple staff.
According to the police report, the engineer approached the sanctum sanctorum, hurled several sticks towards the deity's statue, and then fled the scene. Witnesses described the act as a deliberate act of vandalism that disrupted the ongoing worship rituals. The suspect was taken into custody for questioning and is being held under sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to mischief and causing disturbance to religious worship.
Temple authorities confirmed the incident, stating that the idol was unharmed but the act caused panic among devotees. They have lodged a formal complaint and are cooperating with investigators. The engineer has not yet been released on bail, and the case will be forwarded to the court for further legal action.
No motive has been publicly disclosed, and police have not linked the incident to any broader communal or political agenda. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have urged the public to respect places of worship and report any similar disturbances promptly.
