Elephant Omkar re‑entered Goa and caused damage to farmland as it roamed through villages, prompting officials to intervene.
Elephant Omkar, a lone Asian elephant that had been roaming outside the state, was sighted back in Goa this week. The animal moved through several villages, entering cultivated fields and uprooting crops as it passed.
Farmers reported that the elephant damaged paddy, vegetable and fruit plantations, leaving noticeable gaps in the standing crops. The sudden incursion caused panic among residents who fear further losses.
Local forest officials, accompanied by wildlife volunteers, arrived at the scene to guide the elephant away from the farms. They used non‑lethal deterrents and attempted to herd the animal toward a nearby forested area.
The Department of Forests has warned that similar incidents could recur during the monsoon season, urging farmers to stay alert and report any wildlife sightings promptly.
