Former IDF chief of staff Benny Eisenkot has won the mandate to form Israel's next government, defeating incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a closely contested election.
In the recent Israeli parliamentary elections, former IDF chief of staff Benny Eisenkot emerged as the leading candidate, securing the mandate to form the next government. Eisenkot, who entered politics in 2022, built a broad coalition that attracted parties from the centre‑left to the right. His coalition achieved a majority in the 120‑seat Knesset, giving him the authority to assemble a governing cabinet. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition fell short of a majority, and he is now fighting to retain power in the face of this outcome.
