Education Ministry Repeals School Speaker Ban After Opposition Backlash

The Ministry of Education has withdrawn a recently issued circular that restricted the use of speakers in schools, following criticism from the School Inspection Officers and opposition parties.

The Ministry of Education announced today that it has withdrawn a circular issued earlier this month that had imposed limits on the use of loudspeakers in schools. The directive, which aimed to reduce noise pollution and improve learning environments, was met with strong opposition from School Inspection Officers (SIOs) and several political parties.

SIOs argued that the ban would hinder communication during school assemblies and emergency drills, while opposition leaders cited concerns over the impact on school administration and student engagement. The backlash prompted a review of the policy by the ministry’s regulatory committee.

In a statement, the ministry said the decision to rescind the circular was taken after a thorough assessment of the concerns raised and a consultation with education stakeholders. Officials emphasized that the focus remains on creating conducive learning spaces, but will now explore alternative measures that address noise without restricting speaker use.

The withdrawal marks a shift in the ministry’s approach to school infrastructure regulation and signals a willingness to adapt policies in response to frontline feedback. The ministry will release a revised framework in the coming weeks.
