Investigators say the scheme used fabricated electronic arrest warrants to coerce victims into paying large sums for “legal clearance”.
According to ED officials, the fraud was orchestrated from multiple locations across the country, with the Goa case being the most recent and high‑profile instance. Early reports indicate that at least 30 individuals were affected, and the scam extended to three other states before being halted.
The Directorate has seized several electronic devices and documents that trace the chain of communication among the conspirators. Preliminary findings suggest that the perpetrators exploited loopholes in online legal portals to issue fake warrants.
In response, the ED has initiated arrests of key suspects and is coordinating with state police forces to dismantle the remaining network. Victims have been advised to report any suspicious online legal notices to the ED and local authorities.
