The Election Commission of India clarified to the Bombay High Court that a candidate’s absence from a draft Statement of Information Required (SIR) does not automatically imply the candidate has been deleted from the electoral roll.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) responded to a query from the Bombay High Court (BHC) regarding the status of a candidate who was missing from a draft Statement of Information Required (SIR). The court had asked whether the omission meant the candidate had been removed from the electoral roll.

In its reply, the ECI clarified that a candidate’s absence from the draft SIR does not automatically equate to deletion. The commission explained that the draft is a preliminary document and that candidates may be omitted for various procedural reasons without implying removal.

The ECI further emphasized that the final SIR, which is published after due verification, will reflect the accurate status of all candidates. The court is expected to review the final document before any further action is taken.

This clarification comes ahead of the upcoming elections, where accurate candidate lists are crucial for transparent electoral processes.
