The Election Commission has suspended six officials and directed disciplinary action against 21 others for procedural lapses identified during the recent Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections.

The Election Commission of India announced on Wednesday that six officers attached to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) election machinery have been suspended pending a formal inquiry. The decision follows an internal review that uncovered a series of procedural irregularities during the recent MLC polls in the state.

According to the commission's statement, the identified lapses ranged from deviations in polling booth management to failures in adhering to the Model Code of Conduct. While the six suspended officers will remain out of duty until the investigation concludes, twenty‑one additional staff members have been earmarked for disciplinary action.

The EC said the measures are intended to reinforce the integrity of the electoral process and to send a clear signal that any breach of election norms will be dealt with swiftly. It also pledged to monitor upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh more closely to prevent recurrence of similar issues.

Election observers and political parties have welcomed the move, viewing it as a step toward restoring confidence in the state's electoral administration.
