Drought Grips 74% of Maharashtra, Worst in 25 Years

The state’s meteorological department has reported that about 74 per cent of Maharashtra is currently under drought conditions, the most extensive in the last 25 years. The prolonged dry spell has led to falling groundwater levels and reduced river flows across the region. Farmers in the affected districts are facing delayed sowing and lower yields as soil moisture remains critically low. State officials have warned that the water shortage could strain drinking supplies and agricultural output if the situation does not improve. Relief measures, including water tankers and crop‑insurance schemes, are being mobilised to mitigate the impact.
