Drone‑Delivered Defibrillators to Aid Cardiac Arrest Victims in India

India is piloting a program that uses drones to transport automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to cardiac‑arrest scenes, aiming to cut response times compared with conventional ambulances.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in collaboration with a domestic technology start‑up, has launched a pilot project to dispatch AED‑equipped drones to locations where a cardiac arrest is reported. The initiative, currently being tested in a handful of districts, seeks to deliver the life‑saving device within three to five minutes of the emergency call, a window considerably shorter than the average ambulance arrival time.
Unlike traditional ambulances, which require a crew, vehicle maintenance and road clearance, the drones operate autonomously, navigating via GPS to the exact coordinates supplied by the caller or a nearby bystander. Once on site, the drone hovers, lowers a small parachute‑packed AED, and alerts the caller through a built‑in speaker to begin CPR while the device is retrieved.
Health officials say early defibrillation can increase survival rates from 5‑10 % to over 30 % when performed within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest. The program also includes a public‑awareness component, training volunteers in basic CPR and AED use to maximise the benefit of the rapid delivery system.
If the trial demonstrates a measurable reduction in response time and improved patient outcomes, the Ministry plans to expand the service to major metropolitan areas and eventually to rural regions where ambulance coverage is limited.
