DRDO’s Bio‑Digester Moves From Siachen to Homes and Offices Across India

The defence research agency’s waste‑to‑energy system, first used for soldiers in Siachen, is being adapted for civilian use in households and workplaces.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) originally designed a bio‑digester to treat human waste generated by troops stationed at the high‑altitude Siachen Glacier. The compact unit breaks down waste anaerobically, producing biogas that can be used for cooking or heating while eliminating the need to transport waste down the mountain.
Following successful field trials, DRDO officials announced plans to commercialise the technology for civilian applications. The agency aims to supply the digesters to households and office complexes, offering a low‑maintenance solution that simultaneously generates renewable energy and reduces the load on municipal sewage systems.
The rollout will be coordinated with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and selected state governments, which will oversee pilot installations before a wider market launch. Pricing details are being finalised, with the goal of making the units affordable for middle‑income families.
If adopted at scale, the bio‑digester could provide a sustainable alternative to conventional waste disposal, cut household energy bills and contribute to India’s renewable‑energy targets, while also addressing public‑health concerns linked to untreated sewage.
