The Department of Telecommunications has announced new regulations requiring telecom operators to store customer data within Indian servers, aiming to enhance data security and compliance with domestic privacy norms.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a circular on Tuesday mandating that all telecom service providers store customer data on servers located within India.
Under the new directive, operators must ensure that data related to voice, SMS, and data usage is retained on domestic infrastructure for a minimum period of one year, with a compliance deadline set for the end of 2025.
The move is aimed at strengthening data sovereignty and protecting sensitive customer information from foreign access, aligning with the Information Technology Act and recent privacy guidelines issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Telecom companies are expected to invest in local data centers or partner with Indian cloud providers, a shift that could raise operational costs but is deemed essential for meeting regulatory expectations and safeguarding consumer privacy.
