Domestic tourists have reshaped India's tourism landscape, contributing 5.2 percent to the nation's GDP and generating employment for 8.46 crore people. Their expenditure has surged to five times the previous level.

According to the latest data, domestic tourism now accounts for 5.2 percent of India's gross domestic product. This marks a significant shift in the contribution of travel and leisure activities to the national economy. The sector's role in GDP has grown steadily as more Indians choose to travel within the country.

The tourism industry has also become a major source of livelihood, providing employment to approximately 8.46 crore individuals. These jobs span across hospitality, transport, travel services, and related ancillary sectors, reflecting the wide-reaching impact of domestic travel.

In addition to economic contribution and job creation, domestic tourists have increased their spending dramatically. Their expenditure has risen to five times the level recorded in earlier periods, indicating higher disposable income and greater enthusiasm for local destinations.

Analysts suggest that this surge in domestic tourism could help sustain growth in the hospitality sector and encourage further investment in tourism infrastructure across states.
