Sikkim’s mountainous terrain hosts several high‑altitude glacial lakes that pose a seasonal threat of outburst floods, a hazard that has intensified with climate change. State disaster management officials have been seeking a dedicated point person to coordinate monitoring, early warning and community preparedness.

In a recent development, the administration has identified Dolma Sampa as a potential candidate to serve as the state’s GLOF shield. While details of her appointment are still under review, officials say her background in local governance and familiarity with remote hill communities make her a suitable choice for the task.

The proposal is expected to be discussed in the upcoming cabinet meeting, after which a formal designation could be announced. If confirmed, Sampa would oversee liaison with scientific agencies, lead capacity‑building programmes and help implement mitigation measures across vulnerable valleys.
