The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam announced new age limits, capping district secretaries at 70 and local unit leaders at 45, as part of an organisational overhaul.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has introduced a restructuring of its internal hierarchy, imposing a maximum age of 70 years for district secretaries and 45 years for heads of local party units. The decision was disclosed during a party meeting held in Chennai, where senior leaders outlined the new guidelines aimed at rejuvenating the organisation.
According to the party’s official statement, the age caps are intended to encourage greater participation from younger cadres while ensuring that senior functionaries step aside at a reasonable stage. The move is part of a broader effort to streamline decision‑making and improve grassroots connectivity ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
Party officials indicated that the revised limits will be implemented across all districts of Tamil Nadu, with existing office‑bearers expected to comply by the end of the current month. No further changes to the party’s constitution were reported.
The DMK’s leadership emphasized that the policy does not affect the eligibility for other party positions, and that a review mechanism will be set up to monitor compliance.
Analysts view the step as a strategic attempt to project a youthful image and to address concerns about generational turnover within the party’s ranks.
