Karnataka minister DK Shivakumar told Tamil Nadu and Puducherry officials that the Mekedatu water‑transfer project will not compromise their interests, during a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Karnataka senior minister DK Shivakumar met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the controversial Mekedatu water‑transfer project. In the meeting, Shivakumar conveyed to representatives of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry that the project will be executed in a manner that safeguards their water‑sharing rights.

The Mekedatu scheme, which aims to divert water from the Kaveri River to Bangalore, has faced objections from the southern neighbours who fear reduced river flow downstream. Shivakumar's assurances were intended to address these concerns and to keep inter‑state cooperation intact.

While no detailed technical commitments were disclosed, the Karnataka minister emphasized that the state remains open to dialogue and will adhere to any legal or tribunal directives governing inter‑state water allocations.

The discussion concluded with both ministers agreeing to continue consultations with the concerned states to ensure the project's compliance with existing water‑sharing agreements.

The meeting underscores the political sensitivity surrounding inter‑state water projects and the federal government's role in mediating such disputes.
