Diwali 2024: Markets Buzz as Lakshmi Puja Timings Announced

The Hindu festival of Diwali began today, with retailers reporting a surge of shoppers since early morning. Authorities and religious bodies released the official timings for Lakshmi Puja, prompting devotees to line up at temples and home altars for the ritual of wealth and prosperity. Marketplaces in major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata have been especially crowded, as people purchase sweets, diyas, fireworks and gifts for the celebrations. Vendors say the early rush reflects both traditional customs and the desire to secure festive items before the evening festivities. The day is expected to remain lively, with families gathering for meals and the customary lighting of lamps after sunset.
