The Dimasa Students’ Union, representing the Dimasa youth of Assam, formally presented a set of demands to state authorities this week. The union seeks official recognition of a single, unified identity for the Dimasa community, arguing that fragmented classifications have hampered their socio‑political representation.
In addition to identity issues, the union called for stringent protection of lands traditionally owned by Dimasa families, warning that encroachments and unchecked development threaten their cultural heritage. It also urged the government to prioritize connectivity projects, including road upgrades and improved public transport, to link remote Dimasa habitations with major urban centres.
Union leaders said the demands are intended to address long‑standing grievances and have requested a meeting with the Assam government to discuss implementation timelines. They emphasized that timely action would help preserve the community’s cultural fabric while fostering economic opportunities.
