Delhi’s Air Quality Improves After Rainfall, AQI Drops Significantly

Rainfall across Delhi on Monday led to a noticeable reduction in particulate matter, bringing the city’s air quality index down to healthier levels, officials said.

Rain showers that swept across Delhi on Monday helped clear the dense haze that had lingered over the capital in recent days. Monitoring agencies recorded a sharp fall in concentrations of fine particulate matter, resulting in a lower Air Quality Index (AQI) that moved from unhealthy to a more moderate range.

The improvement was most evident in the early evening, when the rain washed away dust and suspended pollutants from the streets and industrial zones. Residents reported clearer skies and a fresher scent in the air, a welcome change after weeks of smog alerts.

City officials attributed the drop primarily to the natural cleansing effect of the rain, while also noting that reduced vehicular traffic during the storm contributed to the better readings. They cautioned that the gains could be temporary if emission sources resume full activity.

Air quality experts emphasized the need for sustained pollution control measures, such as stricter vehicle norms and greener energy use, to maintain healthier air levels beyond weather‑driven relief.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee will continue to update the public on AQI trends as the monsoon season progresses.
