A fire that broke out at Gaffar Market in Delhi has prompted the Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh to demand comprehensive fire safety audits of commercial premises, citing heightened risks during the festive season.

A blaze erupted in the Gaffar Market area of Delhi on Tuesday evening, causing significant smoke and minor structural damage but no reported casualties. Firefighters arrived within minutes and contained the flames after a half‑hour, while the market’s stalls were temporarily evacuated.

The Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh, representing local traders, issued a statement urging municipal authorities to conduct immediate fire safety audits of all commercial complexes. The body warned that the ongoing festive shopping rush amplifies the danger of similar incidents if preventive measures are not reinforced.

Officials from the Delhi Fire Service confirmed that the Gaffar Market fire was likely due to an electrical fault, but emphasized that many shops lack proper fire extinguishers and clear evacuation routes. The Mahasangh’s call for audits aligns with broader city‑wide efforts to tighten safety compliance ahead of major festivals.

The municipal corporation has pledged to review existing fire safety certificates and schedule inspections in high‑traffic markets. Traders hope the heightened scrutiny will prevent future outbreaks and protect both livelihoods and shoppers during the upcoming holiday period.
