The Delhi government has announced a temporary ban on all BS‑IV and older vehicles registered outside the capital, effective until 31 January.
Delhi's municipal authorities have issued an order to bar entry of all BS‑IV and older vehicles that are registered in states other than the National Capital Territory. The measure, aimed at curbing traffic congestion and improving air quality, will remain in force until the end of January.
The ban applies to cars, vans, and light commercial vehicles that do not meet the newer BS‑VI emission standards and are not Delhi‑registered. Vehicles already registered in Delhi are exempt, and owners will be required to display a temporary permit at the time of entry. Enforcement will be carried out by traffic police at major entry points and toll plazas.
Officials said the temporary restriction will be reviewed after 31 January, with the possibility of extending it if pollution levels do not improve. The decision has drawn mixed reactions from commuters and transport operators, who warn of potential inconvenience but acknowledge the need for cleaner air.
