A red weather alert has been issued for Delhi as heavy showers have flooded several streets, turning them into makeshift canals.

A red weather alert was sounded for the national capital after intense rainstorms caused water to surge onto major thoroughfares, effectively turning them into temporary canals. Meteorological officials said the downpour, which began early this morning, exceeded normal thresholds and prompted the highest level of warning.

The flooding has disrupted traffic across central and south Delhi, with several arterial roads submerged under several inches of water. Commuters reported vehicles stalling and pedestrians wading through ankle‑deep water, while some low‑lying neighborhoods experienced water levels rising to chest height.

Delhi’s disaster management team has deployed rescue boats and sandbags, and police have diverted traffic away from the worst‑affected zones. The India Meteorological Department warned that more rain is expected later in the day, urging residents to avoid non‑essential travel and to stay alert for further updates.

Authorities have also cautioned against entering flooded areas, reminding the public that swift currents can be hazardous even in shallow water. Relief centres have been set up to assist those stranded, and power utilities are monitoring the situation to prevent outages.
