The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will now be completed by December 2029 after three 90‑km stretches in Gujarat remain unfinished, prompting fresh bidding and contractor changes.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced that the long‑awaited Delhi‑Mumbai Expressway will not be operational until December 2029, pushing the original deadline by more than five years.
The postponement is primarily linked to three unfinished sections in Gujarat, together spanning roughly 90 kilometres. Persistent contractor setbacks, including financial strain and failure to meet scheduled milestones, forced the government to terminate existing agreements.
In response, the authorities have launched a fresh bidding process to appoint new contractors for the Gujarat stretches. Officials say the revised timeline is intended to ensure quality compliance and avoid further disruptions, even though it delays the promised nonstop corridor between the national capital and the financial hub.
Stakeholders in logistics and transport have expressed concern over the extended timeline, but the government maintains that completing the expressway to the revised standard is essential for long‑term connectivity and economic benefits.
