The Delhi High Court has asked the Union Territory administration to justify its appeal against a directive on pay parity for teachers, directing the Directorate of School Education and the Education Secretary to appear.

The bench of the Delhi High Court has taken up a petition challenging the Union Territory administration's appeal against a previous order that mandated pay parity for government teachers. The appeal was filed by the administration after a lower court had directed that teachers receive salaries on par with their counterparts in other services.

In its observations, the court noted that the appeal raises significant questions about the implementation of the pay‑parity directive and its impact on the state's education budget. It therefore directed the Directorate of School Education (DSE) and the Education Secretary to appear before the court and provide a detailed explanation of the grounds for the appeal and the expected financial implications.

The High Court's intervention underscores the judiciary's role in overseeing policy decisions that affect public servants, particularly teachers who form the backbone of the education system. The officials are expected to submit their responses within a stipulated timeframe, after which the court will decide whether the appeal merits further consideration or should be dismissed.
