Delhi HC Rejects Bail for Wrestler Sushil Kumar in Chhatrasal Stadium Murder Case

The Delhi High Court, on Tuesday, rejected the bail plea of former Olympic gold medallist Sushil Kumar in the murder case involving the Chhatrasal Stadium incident. The court held that the evidence presented by the prosecution indicates a strong likelihood of conviction and that the accused may tamper with evidence or influence witnesses. The decision comes after the court reviewed the application and the affidavits filed by both parties. Kumar, who has been a prominent figure in Indian wrestling, is currently in custody awaiting trial.

The Chhatrasal Stadium murder case stems from an alleged assault that occurred during a wrestling event in 2022, which led to the death of a spectator. Investigations by the Delhi Police have identified Kumar as a key suspect, and he was arrested in March after a search of his residence. The case is being heard under the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The court cited the seriousness of the allegations and the risk of flight as reasons for denying bail. It also noted that the accused has a history of criminal cases and that the bail application was filed only after the arrest.
