Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for five new expansion projects at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and Yantra India in West Bengal, aiming to boost shipbuilding capacity.
Kolkata, West Bengal – Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended a ceremony on Thursday to lay the foundation stone for five expansion projects jointly undertaken by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India. The projects, spread across GRSE's existing shipyard and Yantra India's facilities, are slated to increase the production capacity for naval vessels and auxiliary ships.
The minister highlighted that the expansions are part of the government's broader push to modernise India's maritime defence infrastructure and reduce reliance on imports. Officials said the new lines will incorporate advanced modular construction techniques, shortening build times for future warships.
The foundation‑laying event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, the West Bengal government and senior executives of GRSE and Yantra India. The projects are expected to generate significant employment opportunities in the region and strengthen Kolkata's position as a key hub for defence manufacturing.
The timeline for completion of the five projects is projected to span the next three to five years, with the first phase focusing on upgrading dry‑dock facilities and installing state‑of‑the‑art welding and fabrication equipment.
