Deep Depression Set to Strike Odisha Coast, Weather Alerts Issued

A deep depression moving westward in the Bay of Bengal is forecast to make landfall along the Odisha coastline within the next 48 hours, prompting the state disaster management authority to issue weather warnings.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified a deep depression centered over the central Bay of Bengal, tracking westward at a speed of about 12 km/h. Forecast models show the system intensifying slightly before it reaches the eastern coast of Odisha by late Saturday night.
Meteorologists warn that the depression could bring widespread heavy rainfall of 70‑100 mm in coastal districts, accompanied by gusty winds reaching 50‑60 km/h. Low‑lying areas, especially near Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack, may experience waterlogging and localized flooding.
The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) has issued a Level‑2 weather warning, advising fishermen to remain ashore, urging residents to secure loose objects, and recommending that schools in vulnerable zones stay closed. Relief teams are on standby, and emergency shelters have been prepared in flood‑prone villages.
Officials note that similar systems have caused significant disruption in the past, and they are monitoring river levels closely to mitigate any surge in water flow once the rains subside.
