Cyclone Arnab has weakened into a depression over the Bay of Bengal, prompting the central government to pledge relief assistance to four affected states. Meteorological authorities report the storm’s intensity has dropped below cyclonic storm thresholds.
Cyclone Arnab, which had been tracking across the Bay of Bengal, has now weakened into a depression, with wind speeds falling below 63 km/h. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a final advisory, noting that the system no longer meets the criteria for a cyclonic storm.
In response, the Union Home Ministry has announced that it will provide immediate relief support to the four states most at risk: Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. The assistance will include emergency supplies, medical aid, and logistical support for evacuation and rehabilitation.
Officials in the affected states have begun mobilising local authorities and emergency services. Evacuation centres have been set up in coastal districts, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is on standby.
The IMD continues to monitor the residual system, advising residents to stay alert for any sudden changes in weather conditions and to follow local authorities’ instructions.
