Heavy, untimely rains from Cyclone Arnab on Oct 29‑31 inundated fields in Seoni district, Madhya Pradesh, wiping out paddy crops across more than 50 villages and raising fears of substantial farmer losses.

The cyclonic storm Arnab swept across central India in the last days of October, bringing continuous rain to Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh on 29, 30 and 31 October. The precipitation was far heavier than the usual monsoon pattern for that period, turning agricultural lands into waterlogged fields.

Farmers in more than fifty villages reported that standing water filled their paddy paddies, submerging seedlings that were at a critical growth stage. The excess water is expected to cause severe damage to the rice crop, effectively destroying the harvest that many families depend on for their livelihood.

With the crop loss looming, the farming community is confronting the prospect of significant financial hardship. The uncertainty over the extent of the damage has heightened anxiety among growers, who fear that the reduced yield will translate into lower income and increased debt burdens.

Local authorities have been alerted to the situation, and preliminary assessments are expected to determine the scale of compensation or relief that may be required, although no official figures have been released yet.
