Cyclone Arnab has caused the Rushikulya River embankment to give way, leading to extensive flooding across Ganjam district in Odisha.

The powerful Cyclone Arnab swept across the eastern coast of India, striking Odisha’s Ganjam district with heavy rains and strong winds. The storm’s surge overwhelmed the embankment along the Rushikulya River, causing it to rupture and flood the surrounding low‑lying areas.

As water poured through the breach, several villages along the riverbank were inundated, cutting off road access and disrupting electricity supplies. Residents were forced to move to higher ground as floodwaters rose rapidly, with many seeking shelter in temporary relief camps set up by local authorities.

State disaster management officials have mobilised rescue teams, including the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and the Indian Army, to evacuate affected families and distribute essential supplies. Officials warned that the situation could worsen if the cyclone’s remnants bring additional rainfall, urging people to stay alert and follow safety directives.

The breach also raised concerns about the integrity of other river embankments in the region, prompting a rapid inspection by the Water Resources Department. Preliminary assessments suggest that reinforcement work will be needed to prevent similar failures in future monsoon events.

Relief efforts continue as the cyclone moves away, with the district administration coordinating with NGOs and community groups to provide food, clean water, and medical aid to those displaced by the floods.
