CoTU Accuses MP Bimol Akoijam of Insulting Army Over Leimakhong Row

✍️ Northeast Today 🗓 14 Jul 2026, 10:34 AM 👁 1

The Council of Tribal Unions (CoTU) has publicly criticized Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam, alleging that his remarks on the Leimakhong dispute have repeatedly insulted the Indian Army.

The Council of Tribal Unions (CoTU), a prominent tribal body in Manipur, released a statement today condemning Member of Parliament Bimol Akoijam for his comments on the Leimakhong dispute. CoTU alleged that Akoijam’s remarks have become a habit of insulting the Indian Army, a stance that the organization deems unacceptable.

Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur constituency, has been vocal about the Leimakhong issue, a long‑standing territorial disagreement involving local tribal groups. His statements, according to CoTU, have escalated tensions and undermined the army’s efforts to maintain peace in the region.

The CoTU statement called on the central government to address the MP’s conduct and urged the army to remain neutral in political disputes. It also demanded that Akoijam retract his statements and issue an apology to the armed forces.

Akoijam’s spokesperson has not yet responded to the allegations. The incident comes amid growing concerns over political rhetoric that may inflame communal and tribal tensions in the northeastern state.
