Officials say coastal erosion is rapidly advancing on Odisha's seaboard, endangering villages and agricultural land.
Coastal erosion along Odisha's eastern shoreline has intensified in recent weeks, according to a statement from the state’s disaster management department. The retreat of the sea has already swallowed several metres of beach, exposing vulnerable villages and farmland to salinity intrusion and loss of livelihood.
Local residents report that traditional fishing harbors are becoming unusable and that the protective sand dunes are disappearing. Farmers near the affected stretch are seeing their fields turn barren as seawater seeps into the soil, prompting concerns over food security in the region.
The state government has announced an emergency assessment and is planning short‑term measures such as temporary embankments and sand replenishment. Officials also urged the central government to allocate additional funds for long‑term coastal protection projects, citing climate‑change‑driven sea‑level rise as a key factor.
