Coal ministry says Uttar Pradesh power shortfall not linked to coal supply

The Ministry of Coal clarified that the recent power shortage in Uttar Pradesh is not caused by a lack of coal, dismissing supply concerns.
New Delhi – A spokesperson from the Ministry of Coal told reporters that the ongoing power shortage in Uttar Pradesh is unrelated to coal availability. The ministry emphasized that existing coal stockpiles are sufficient and that scheduled deliveries to the state's thermal plants are proceeding as planned.
State officials had earlier hinted that a shortfall in coal shipments might be aggravating the electricity deficit. However, the central ministry refuted this, noting that coal inventories at major mines and ports remain robust and that logistics bottlenecks are being addressed.
The ministry suggested that the power crunch could stem from factors such as heightened summer demand, transmission constraints, or maintenance outages at generating units. It urged the Uttar Pradesh power department to continue its investigations into grid performance and demand‑side management.
While the coal supply is deemed secure, the ministry pledged to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with state agencies to ensure uninterrupted fuel flow to power stations.
