Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said a sum of ₹200‑300 crore has been offered to fund a new medical college in South Tripura during GBP Hospital's 66th foundation day.

On the occasion of the 66th foundation day of GBP Hospital in Tripura, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha announced that an offer of between ₹200 crore and ₹300 crore has been received to establish a new medical college in South Tripura.

The proposed institution, tentatively named South Tripura Medical College, is expected to serve the underserved southern districts of the state, providing both undergraduate medical education and tertiary healthcare services.

According to the CM, the pledged amount will be directed towards land acquisition, construction of academic and hospital blocks, procurement of modern medical equipment, and initial operational expenses. He emphasized that the college will help bridge the doctor‑patient gap in the region.

State officials said the proposal will now be examined by the relevant ministries and the funding source will be verified before formal approvals are sought. If approved, the project could commence within the next two years, creating hundreds of jobs and improving health outcomes for local communities.
