In Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, authorities are working to revive water tanks clogged by silt, reduced inflows and altered catchment areas, aiming to restore irrigation for local farmers.

The irrigation tanks of Chittoor district have been suffering from siltation and diminished water inflow, a problem exacerbated by changes in the surrounding catchment areas. The resulting loss of storage capacity has left many farmers without reliable water for their crops.

In response, the district administration has launched a comprehensive rejuvenation programme. The plan includes desilting of the tanks, repairing embankments, and constructing check dams to improve water retention. Officials also intend to re‑line tank beds with concrete to reduce seepage.

Local agricultural officers report that the first phase of the work is already underway, with several tanks cleared of silt and ready for re‑fill. The initiative is expected to revive irrigation for thousands of acres of farmland and bring relief to the farming community.
