China has introduced autonomous traffic enforcement robots that monitor violations but lack weapons or arrest authority.
Beijing announced the rollout of a fleet of traffic‑monitoring robots designed to detect speeding, red‑light jumps and illegal lane changes. The machines are equipped with cameras, sensors and AI algorithms that can identify violations and issue electronic fines to offending drivers. Unlike the fictional RoboCop, these units carry no firearms and have no power to detain motorists; they merely record evidence and transmit it to police control rooms. Officials say the deployment aims to reduce human error and improve road safety in congested urban areas. Critics, however, warn that reliance on automated enforcement raises privacy concerns and may not replace the need for human oversight.
