The protest in Chhatarpur, which started 16 days ago, was a symbolic demonstration against the Ken-Betwa link project. On Sunday, the police and administration jointly took action to end the protest. The protesters were staging a symbolic 'chita' or funeral pyre on the Barana river. The exact reasons behind the police action are not clear, but it is known that the protest was peaceful. The Ken-Betwa link project has been a contentious issue in the region, with many locals opposing it due to environmental and social concerns.
