Chennai Fisherfolk Protest New Secretariat Project in Pattinapakkam, Hoist Black Flags

A group of fisherfolk from Chennai gathered for an emergency meeting after learning about the state government's proposal to construct a new Secretariat complex in Pattinapakkam, a coastal neighbourhood traditionally used for fishing activities. During the meeting, participants hoisted black flags, a symbolic gesture of dissent, to publicly register their opposition.

The fishermen argued that the proposed development would encroach upon fishing zones, disrupt marine ecosystems and jeopardise the economic sustenance of thousands of families dependent on the sea. They also expressed concerns that the project could lead to displacement without adequate rehabilitation measures.

Local leaders of the fishing community have urged the authorities to reconsider the site selection and to engage in a transparent dialogue before any construction begins. The protest adds to a series of recent coastal community actions across Tamil Nadu against large‑scale infrastructure projects perceived to threaten traditional livelihoods.

State officials have not yet issued a formal response, but the incident underscores growing tensions between development initiatives and the rights of coastal populations in the region.
